‘A rose by any other name would smell as sweet’ – thus goes the popular quote from Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. And rightly so! All of us are familiar with the rose flower. Right from our gardens to pots in our backyard or balcony, to the flower markets to popular movies, the rose has always made an appearance and every time you look at a rose, you cannot help but smile at the sheer beauty of the flower.
Most of us at some point in time would have grown roses in our backyards or at least wanted to do so someday. Many times you would have heard people say that growing rose bushes is a difficult task, but it isn’t. A few basic tips can go a long way in ensuring that your bushes stay healthy and bloom throughout the year. Let us look at a few basics.
With the exception of really large climbers, most roses can be successfully grown in pots. For your rose plant to be healthy, it needs sun, water, drainage, good soil and a little bit care. If you are planting rose bushes in containers, make sure that the pots are large enough. Another important factor is to plant that particular type of roses that suits you.
Make sure that your rose bushes get adequate sunlight. They require about 6 hours of sunlight to grow well and flourish. It does not really matter what time of the day they get the sunlight as long as they get the required amount of sunlight.
Rose bushes put a lot of their energy into the production of flowers. Hence it important to keep them well watered and also give them the required manure. You can check locally and put feedings of a good organic fertilizer.
Mulching process is a must for the healthy maintenance of your rose bushes. You should mulch your roses regularly. It prevents other competition plants from taking root in the rose’s area and also helps in protecting the roses against severe winter conditions.
Rose bushes need ample quantities of water to flourish. They have deep roots and they can extract water from the soil even after the surface dries out. If a rose is well watered, it blooms well and also grows more resistant to diseases. It is important to provide the rose bushes with regular water supply especially when newly planted and till the time they are established which can take around two years. After that watering once in a while will suffice and if your roses are in the garden where they can take in rainwater, then you may not have to water them at all.
Keep checking on your rose bushes regularly. You may find that there is some unwanted plant growth from the roots of grafted plants. These extra plants can be easily differentiated as their leaves may have a different colour and shape as compared to the main bush. It is essential to remove off these extra plants as they tend to take up the nutrients themselves.
By following a few basic tips and lavishing a little love and care on your roses, you can watch them bloom day after day, year after year!
